How Many Focus Groups Are Usually Done On One Topic?

It is not uncommon to think that one focus group will be enough to collect sufficient data. However, this is not the case. Multiple focus groups are often conducted when trying to gather reliable data. One focus group is based on a maximum of 12 people who are all similar based on a certain criteria. This is not enough to come to a definite conclusion.

It is hard to say just how many focus groups will be conducted. Again, this all depends on the topic at hand. It is really up to the client and the researcher on how many groups will be conducted. Each group will be conducted with people who are similar based on different criterion for each group. If the researcher or client wants a diverse group of people and reactions, more than two group should be held. For these reasons, and the fact that focus groups are broad and general, it is hard to say exactly how many groups will be done or should be done.
